Trauma

Traumatic Stress

Traumatic stress is a normal reaction to overwhelming events, and most of us will experience one or more significant traumas in the course of our lives.  We all have natural reserves of resilience depending on our backgrounds, inner strengths, and support systems.  However, there are times when experiences overwhelm our natural coping, and reaching out to a professional skilled in the treatment of trauma can become an essential part of recovery.  You may be experiencing acute stress due to a recent event or continue to experience negative thoughts, nightmares, flashbacks, anxiety, numbness, anger, difficulty in your relationships or other problems that are not resolving with time.  In some cases, you may have been exposed to multiple traumas over months or even years due to physical, sexual, or emotional abuse and neglect.  These experiences can profoundly impact how you feel about yourself and others and how you navigate the world.  I have pursued and continue to pursue advanced training in Traumatic Stress Studies and the use of evidence-based treatments for trauma.  I will collaborate with you on identifying goals, facing your past, and finding pathways to healing.

Anxiety & Depression

Anxiety and depression can occur for anyone as we attempt to cope with the challenges life brings us.  Perhaps you are experiencing transitions in your life, coping with overwhelming stressors at work or at home, or just want to build more resilience.  Persistent sadness and anxiety can make it feel impossible to cope with life effectively.  I will work with you to identify the sources of your distress and support you in implementing new strategies for coping with emotions, solving problems, and building healthier habits and relationships.

Help for Helpers

Having worked as a helping professional for over 20 years, I know firsthand how challenging it can be to maintain balance while trying to care for others.  Unfortunately, helping professionals are often the last to recognize and attend to their needs.  I have experience working with various helping professionals, including healthcare workers, social workers, teachers, public service workers, family caregivers, and others.  I have a strong commitment to providing a safe and inviting space where you can address your own emotional needs, work on preventing or addressing burnout and build the necessary resilience to help you continue providing care for others while protecting your own mental health.

EMDR

EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to focus briefly on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms. (Maxfield, 2019).  I have completed training in EMDR and regularly participate in consultation and professional development programs to enhance my skills in the use of this evidence-based trauma treatment.
